Akul Dhawan, 18-year-old student of University of Illinois found dead after reportedly missing

Akul Dhawan Death – Authorities are looking into a fatality they believe was an accident involving a student at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. The Champaign County Coroner’s Office said Saturday night that Akul B. Dhawan, 18, had died. His body was discovered on Saturday in the 1200 block of West Nevada Street. Coroner Steve Thuney stated that at this point, there is no reason to suspect foul play.

At 1:23 a.m. on Saturday, the roommate of the student reported him missing to the police. The student’s roommate claimed that he had not seen him in approximately an hour and that he was not reachable by phone. The student’s residential hall, the area where they were last seen, and the likely route between them—which included the Quad—were all investigated by UI police. In addition, police looked into nearby hospitals and made phone calls to the student.

Officers and paramedics were called at 11:08 on Saturday morning after a UI worker discovered the man on a building’s rear porch. When he was found, he had already passed away. Monday has been set aside for an autopsy, according to Thuney.

Anyone with more information is encouraged to contact UI police at 217-333-1216. Witnesses may remain anonymous by contacting Champaign County Crime Stoppers at 217-373-TIPS, online at 373tips.com or through the P3 Tips mobile app. All messages to Crime Stoppers are received by a third party and are electronically stripped of identifying information before being forwarded to police.

In the wake of this tragic incident, we extend our deepest condolences to the families affected by this heart-wrenching loss.
