What began as an ordinary summer day quickly turned into a scene of sorrow and devastation when police discovered the lifeless bodies of a couple inside a residence, victims of what has now been confirmed as a murder-suicide.
On Monday, the Columbus Police Department officially released the identities of the deceased individuals: Beverly Barnes, 59, and James Barnes, 55. The confirmation of their identities, along with the nature of the incident, has sent shockwaves through the community.
The Columbus Division of Police responded to a distress call on Sunday afternoon, following reports of gunshots in a quiet neighborhood on Parma Avenue. Upon arrival, officers were confronted with a harrowing scene.
Beverly Barnes, a resident of Columbus’ East Side, was found unresponsive inside the home. Despite immediate attention from emergency personnel, she was pronounced dead at 2:07 p.m. by the Columbus Division of Fire medics. Her death, as confirmed by police, was the result of a gunshot wound.
Nearby, James Barnes, also suffering from gunshot wounds, was discovered by the responding officers. Unlike Beverly, James was still alive when emergency services arrived. He was quickly transported to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center in downtown Columbus. Despite the valiant efforts of medical staff, James Barnes was pronounced dead at 2:56 p.m., just under an hour after he was found.
