Well-known poet, Brian Brett passed away following long health battle.

Brian Brett Death – Canadian poet, Brian Brett has passed away suddenly. He was confirmed dead on Wednesday, January 17, 2024. He died leaving a huge gap in the world of poetry and journalism, one which may never be filled in a long time. Many are devastated by his passing to say the least and he will always be missed by all those who had the pleasure of meeting him during the course of his life.

Since the news of his death surfaced, many have not hesitated to share their heartfelt condolences with the family of Brian Brett, also paying tribute to him in recently released statements. Everyone is urged to keep the family in their thoughts and prayers as they navigate through this sad time grieving the unimaginable loss of Brian Brett.

Who was Brian Brett?
With a career that began in the late 1960s, Brian was a significant force in the writing and publishing industry in British Columbia. He was a very important character. He was a contributor to the development of the British Columbia Poetry in the Schools program, a professor of Creative Writing at the University of British Columbia, and a Writer in Residence in a variety of locations, including Whitehorse in 1999 and Toronto in 2016.

He wrote fifteen volumes and five broadsides, and his work was published in at least 25 anthologies, as well as several literary publications and newspapers. His writing has received several honors, including the Writers’ Trust Matt Cohen Award for Lifetime Achievement (2016), the BC Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Literary Excellence (2012), and the CBC Literary Award for Poetry (2011).

Brian loved nature and everything it had to offer, and he spent decades at his remote house on Salt Spring Island, which he dubbed Trauma Farm — also the title of his 2009 award-winning memoir. Brian’s year as Chair was eventful. He undertook a cross-Canada tour of regional meetings, maintained a close watch on public financing difficulties across the country, and spoke out against government monitoring and censorship of literature. In his 2006 AGM report, he spoke to “the sometimes mind-numbing copyright legislation, which is crucial to us, even as it makes our eyes roll.”

According to reports, Brian Brett died from sepsis after a long bout of declining health. We do not know what led to his health battle at this time. More details will be revealed in due time.
