Death; Jack Taunton died in Vancouver on Oct. 23, Lions Gate Road Runners mourns

Jack Taunton, the co-founder of Lions Gate Road Runners passed away on Wednesday, October 23 in Vancouver. He suffered many health problems in later years, but was an inspiration in his courageous insistence on rigorous exercise.

Runners knew Jack as co-founder of the Vancouver Marathon and Vancouver Sun Run, which both became huge events, and as a 2:20s marathoner whose enthusiasm made Lions Gate Road Runners one of the world’s most significant clubs in the early running boom.

Jack was an inspiration to everyone who met him. Lions Gate Road Runners remembers how much Jack loved running road relays such as Haney to Harrison, Jasper to Banff, and Kananaskis. He was a major figure internationally in sports medicine and the history of running, as well as contributing generously to others’ lives, including mine.

Jack deservedly received the Order of Canada for his lifelong contribution as Canadian team doctor, chief medical officer for six major Games, including the 2010 Winter Olympics, and, with his colleague Dr Doug Clement, creators of the world-leading sports medicine centre at University of British Columbia. He was Emeritus professor of that University.

As a Life Member, Jack’s contributions to both CASEM and the broader field of sports medicine in Canada are immeasurable. His passion, dedication, and leadership left a lasting impact on our community and the athletes he cared for over the years. He was a kind soul always there with words of encouragement and support.

In the sports med community he was legendary and his work there will be felt for decades to come. Chief medical officer for Canada’s 2000 Olympic team just five weeks after open heart surgery and later for the entire Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics.

We extend our sincere condolences to Cheryl and the entire Taunton family. We are profoundly grateful for all that Jack did to advance our organization and the field. His legacy will continue to inspire.
