An Intense Participant in the Chess Community
Born in 1969, Gregor Johann resided in Germany’s southwest. He was an enthusiastic player and administrator of chess who had been actively involved in the game for more than thirty years. His love of the game was visible in every aspect of his life, and he rose to prominence both domestically and globally in the chess community in Germany.
Assistance to the German Chess Federation and FIDE
Gregor Johann has been an important member of the FIDE Rules Commission since 2018. His service on the Commission played a crucial role in ensuring that the game’s regulations upheld the highest standards of integrity and fairness.
His contemporaries recognized him for his thorough knowledge of the game and dedication to its advancement, and his contributions to the Commission were highly valued.
Gregor was the Federal Tournament Director for the German Chess Federation in addition to his work with FIDE. He was in charge of the German Chess Championships in this capacity, and he did so with a great deal of expertise and attention. His work in setting up and running chess competitions throughout Germany encouraged many players and contributed to the sport’s expansion.
Beyond the Game of Chess
Gregor Johann worked as a product manager at a software firm outside of his career, where his knowledge and abilities were equally appreciated. Even with his hectic schedule, Gregor managed to take in the scenic beauty of the German countryside, frequently hiking and spending time in nature during his free time.
His admiration for the great outdoors was a reflection of his well-rounded lifestyle, which he achieved by striking a balance between his obligations to his career and his personal interests. We honor Gregor Johann’s life and the legacy he leaves behind even as we grieve his passing. The chess community has lost a real champion, but his efforts and passion for the game will continue to live on in the many lives he touched.
