Howe Bridge Lowell Suicide – Tragedy struck the University of Massachusetts Lowell (UML) community on Friday morning, January 24, 2025, when a male student died from an apparent suicide at the Richard P. Howe Bridge.

Police urged the public to avoid the area and seek alternative routes during the rescue effort.

The incident, which unfolded around 11:13 a.m., prompted an emergency alert titled “UML Emergency” regarding a rescue operation at the bridge, which connects Merrimack Street and VFW Highway.

According to reports, first responders received a call about a male who had jumped off the bridge. Emergency crews reached the individual approximately five minutes later and found him with a faint pulse.

Despite their swift response and efforts to save him, the student tragically passed away shortly afterward. In an email sent to the UMass Lowellcommunity, university officials confirmed the student’s death, identity and expressed condolences to his family and friends.

This devastating incident has left the UML campus in mourning, and counseling services are being made available to students, faculty, and staff. The university emphasized the importance of mental health support and urged anyone struggling to seek help.

The tragedy highlights the ongoing need for awareness and action surrounding mental health and suicide prevention. Community members are encouraged to look out for one another and connect those in need with appropriate resources.
