Groman was raised in a household that was enthusiastic about cooking and entertaining. He was born in Lafayette, California. As the youngest of four children, he recalls pitching in to help his parents and siblings in the kitchen starting at age five.
At seven, he nearly set the house on fire while baking potato chips! He worked in restaurants throughout high school and college at Yale, where he studied in psychology, because he was drawn to the culinary and hospitality industries.
About Hugh Groman
Following college, Groman lived in New York and “crossed jobs off the list” until he heard about a vacancy at the recently established Gramercy Tavern. He went to see Tom Colicchio and was hired as a kitchen assistant.
He worked as the garde manger for a year, eventually rising through the ranks to take over the casual Tavern section of the restaurant, which served meals cooked on a wood-burning grill. After that, he embarked on a lengthy culinary tour around the nation, performing at eateries all over the place.
In 1997, he moved back to New York and opened a catering company out of the kitchen of his apartment. He established the Boerum Hill Food Company on Smith Street, which is now experiencing growth, in 1999. Groman’s good, homemade cuisine and friendly service made Boerum Hill cuisine Company a hit right away. He eventually came to the conclusion that he had to return to the Bay Area, and in 2001 he sold the company.
