Joppatowne High School Shooting Today – The Harford County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting inside Joppatowne High School Friday.
According to a letter from the school system, a fight broke out between two students inside a school bathroom. One student, age 16, allegedly pulled a gun and shot the other who is 15-years-old.
The suspected shooter was taken into custody a short time later. So far no firearm has been recovered. Sheriff Jeff Gahler said the victim is in critical condition at the hospital. At this time, it’s believed just one shot was fired.
In a letter the school system said both students were known to each other, but didn’t say what led to the fight. Gahler said current state law prohibits detectives from speaking with the accused gunman due to his age, although he is expected to be charged as an adult.
While stopping short of confirming whether the suspect had a prior juvenile record, Gahler did say he was known to law enforcement. This shooting follows the Wednesday’s tragedy, where two teachers and two students were killed at a school in Georgia.
Parents are able to pick up their children at Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church, less than half-a-mile from the school. The county’s also opened a non-emergency information hot-line, 410-838-5800, for parents needing to locate their children.
