Munich Shooting: Police in Munich shot and killed a suspicious person near a Nazi-era museum and the Israeli Consulate.
The suspect died at the scene after exchanging gunfire with police, according to Bavaria’s interior minister on Thursday. According to a police spokeswoman, officers saw a person carrying a “long gun” in the Karolinenplatz area of the city centre at 9 a.m.
Andreas Franken stated that there was no evidence of any other injuries. The suspect died on the spot. Police claimed there was no evidence of any further suspects in the event.
The shooting occurred on the 52nd anniversary of the Munich Olympics attacks, in which 11 Israeli athletes were slain by Palestinian terrorists in 1972. It was unclear if the event was tied to the anniversary.
According to one of Germany’s largest daily newspapers, Süddeutsche Zeitung, a neighbourhood resident heard gunfire and police sirens, and there were dozens of officers present.
Shouts of “run, run” could be heard, they said. Benedikt Franke, deputy chairman and CEO of the Munich Security Conference (MSC), informed BILD that his office, which is situated next to the museum, apparently the Munich Documentation Centre, had been sealed off and staff were on lockdown. He reported hearing a “loud bang” and “at least a dozen shots” about 9.10 a.m.
According to Israel’s foreign ministry, the embassy in Munich was closed at the time of the shooting, and no staff members were injured. Police said they had reinforced their presence in the city, Germany’s third-largest, but there were no reports of new incidents or suspects. Germany’s interior minister stated that there was a “serious incident” in Munich and that protecting Israeli installations was a “high priority.”
The museum and research institute, which focuses on the history of Germany’s Nazi dictatorship from 1933 to 1945, is located close. Israeli Consulate in Munich’s Maxvorstadt district. Police had earlier stated that a massive operation was underway in response to an incident and asked the public to avoid the area. In a post on the social media platform X.
