About Nell Smith Music Career
This uplifting and touching narrative begins when Smith, who was born in Leeds, United Kingdom, relocated to Canada. It was at the age of twelve that she first met Wayne Coyne, who was the headliner for The Flaming Lips’ performance at the Sled Island Festival in Calgary in 2018.

Smith was accompanied by her family at the time. Nell had already been to a number of Lips performances, and she was a regular at the front of the stage, where she would be costumed as a parrot and yell out the band’s lyrics.

Soon after, Coyne started to take note of the young girl dressed as a parrot. During the performance in Calgary, he sang a copy of David Bowie’s song straight to her, and Nell responded by singing every word back.

During the time that Nell was learning to play the guitar, Coyne maintained touch with her father Jude and Nell, forming a musical bond with them. Additionally, their creative partnership began to develop when Nell began writing her own songs.

Coyne recommended that Nell record some Nick Cave songs and send them to Oklahoma to be supported by the band. This was in response to the fact that a trip that was scheduled to take place in Oklahoma to record with the band had to be cancelled due to covid.

Nick Cave was the one that Coyne decided to go with because Nell was unfamiliar with him and hence would not have any preconceived thoughts about how to sing the songs.
