Police are interviewing a 15-year-old Melton West kid, who was apprehended this evening. A bystander performed CPR on the 16-year-old boy, but he was pronounced dead on the site.
Police believe the two boys knew each other. It is unclear whether the knife used in the attack has been found. According to Detective Senior Sergeant Nigel L’Estrange of Victoria Police, the young boy was dropped off at the shopping complex earlier that morning by his mother.
“His mother is currently with us at the moment. As you can imagine, this is a tragic and senseless act that has occurred here in school holidays in an area where there’s going to be lots of kids attending and a lot of people around,” L’Estrange said.
Much of the crowded shopping mall remained open Thursday afternoon while police set up a crime scene near the outdoor dining area. L’Estrange stated that the shopping mall would have an increased police presence, as well as additional patrols, to ensure community safety in the aftermath of the stabbing.
Woodgrove Shopping Centre manager Kylie Robertson said it would work with police to bolster security. “Our thoughts and condolences are with the victim’s family and all those impacted by today’s events. Additional security personnel have been deployed on-site and are continuing work with police to support a heightened level of security across the local area.”
