Sarah Marie Chavez Pedestrian Death, Police identify 46-year-old killed in crash near Park, 22nd

The Tucson Police Department has released new information about the fatal crash involving a pedestrian that happened on Tuesday morning, Jan 30, near Park and 22nd.

The TPD says officers from Operations Division South and personnel from the Tucson Fire Department responded to S. Park Avenue and E. 22nd St. after 6:30 a.m. for reports of a white 2014 Dodge Charger and an adult female pedestrian collision.

Tucson Police said the pedestrian, identified as 46-year-old Sarah Marie Chavez, died at the scene. The family has been notified.

During the investigation, detectives determined that Chavez was attempting to cross E. 22nd St. from south to north when she was hit by a Dodge Charger traveling westbound on E. 22nd St. at a speed in excess of the posted 30 mph nighttime speed limit.

The TPD said Chavez was in a marked crosswalk; however, she crossed against the signal and the traffic light was green for eastbound and westbound traffic on E. 22nd St.

According to Tucson Police, the driver of the Dodge Charger stopped and cooperated with the investigation. An officer from the Impaired Driver Enforcement Unit evaluated the driver of the Charger and determined he was not impaired by alcohol or drugs at the time of the collision.

Authorities said Chavez crossing against the signal was the main contributing factor in the collision; however, the investigation is focused on the Dodge Charger’s speed.

Tucson Police also said the driver of the Dodge Charger did not have a valid driver’s license.

The investigation is ongoing and no citations or charges have been issued.

In the wake of this tragic incident, we extend our deepest condolences to the families affected by this heart-wrenching loss. As they grapple with the indescribable pain of bidding farewell to their loved ones, we share in their sorrow and stand in solidarity during this time of profound grief.
