Tragically, a sixth life has been lost in a devastating house fire in South Bend last weekend, following the loss of five children. 11-year-old Angel Smith was declared deceased at Riley Children’s Health in Indianapolis at 9:46 a.m. on Friday. The hospital informed our group that they did not have a patient with that name on file when we contacted them.
On Sunday night, a fire broke out inside a home in the 200 block of N. LaPorte Avenue. Angel and her father, David Smith, who is 67 years old, were the only survivors. Five little children, ranging in age from ten months to seventeen months, did so right after the fire. Earlier this week, the South Bend Fire Department identified them:
The Smith children are as follows: Demetis, 10, Davida, 9, Deontay, 5, D’Angelo, 4, and Faith, 17 months. After being transported to Memorial Hospital, Angel was then transported to Indianapolis via air for further specialist care. The thick smoke and flames rendered it impossible for David, who managed to escape from the residence, to return inside and help save his children, according to officials.
GoFundMe: This disaster also harmed two firefighters. Roy White, a firefighter attempting to rescue the children trapped inside, fell through the second floor of the house. After a brief hospital stay, White has returned home and will not be required to work until additional instructions are given. After receiving treatment for minor burns, another firefighter was cleared to resume their duties.
So far, there has been no official word on what started the fire or where it originated. In a lengthy article, however, the South Bend Tribune found out that the house had failed a federal safety assessment as recently as six months ago. The complete article from the South Bend Tribune can be found by clicking here. The “Smith Family Memorial Fund” was established earlier this week at 1st Source Bank by a group of community leaders to assist with funeral expenses and other necessary family needs. Any branch of 1st Source Bank accepts donations.
