Steven Fernandez Ridgefield Park NJ Death – The Ridgefield Park community is mourning the tragic loss of Officer Steven Fernandez, who passed away over the weekend in a snowmobile accident in Vermont.
His sudden passing has left family, friends, and colleagues in shock, as they remember a man who dedicated his life to serving others.
A Ridgefield Park native, Fernandez was a beloved figure in his community, known for his kindness, unwavering support, and commitment to public service.
Steven Fernandez joined the Ridgefield Park Police Department in 2015, fulfilling a lifelong dream of becoming a police officer. His passion for helping others, however, began long before that.
He previously served as a volunteer with the ambulance corps and the village fire department, demonstrating his selflessness and deep care for his community.
Prior to his career in law enforcement, Fernandez worked as a registered nurse at Hackensack Meridian University Medical Center, where he continued to make a difference in the lives of those in need.
In 2023, Fernandez took on a significant role within the department when he was appointed as the RPPD’s LGBTQ+ liaison. As the department’s first openly gay male police officer, he viewed this position as an opportunity to strengthen the relationship between law enforcement and the LGBTQ+ community.
He was proud to serve in this capacity, emphasizing the importance of inclusivity and mutual understanding. “I’m fortunate to work for a department where my fellow officers and administration have been nothing but supportive,” Fernandez said in 2023. “I look forward to working with the community and my fellow officers to continue to bridge the gap.” His efforts helped foster greater trust and communication, leaving a lasting impact on both the police force and the people he served.
Fernandez’s loss is being deeply felt by his colleagues, who describe him as a source of light within the department. The Ridgefield Park Police Benevolent Association (PBA) honored his memory, calling him “a beacon of kindness, laughter, and unwavering support.” His positive spirit and ability to uplift those around him made him an irreplaceable part of the force, and his absence will be profoundly felt by everyone who had the privilege of working with him.
As news of his passing spread, heartfelt condolences poured in on social media from friends, former colleagues, and community members. Many remembered him for his infectious smile, his warm personality, and his dedication to his work. One former colleague wrote, “You were always a gentleman and I rarely saw you without a smile on your face. I’m glad you got to live your dream out in becoming a police officer. You looked truly happy over the years. I hope your friends and family find comfort in knowing how highly people who knew you thought about you. The world needs more people like you. Rest in Peace bud.” Another friend described him as “one of the most genuine sonsabitches around,” adding, “Not the news anyone wants to wake up to… ever. Rest easy, bro. Truly one of the best!”
