Born Teila Tuli on June 14, 1968, Taylor Wily was an American actor, mixed martial artist, and former sumo wrestler. He was American Samoan and is from Laie, Hawaii. His recurring role on Hawaii Five-0 as Kamekona Tupuola has made him well-known. Additionally, he played a recurrent role in Magnum, P.I.
Wily joined the Azumazeki stable in March 1987 after being recruited by another Hawaiian, former sekiwake Takamiyama Daigorō, who had created the stable the year before. Takamikuni’s shikona (sumo name) was bestowed to him. Throughout his first 14 official fights, he went undefeated and won two straight tournament titles, or yūshō.
At about 440 pounds (200 kg), he was among the biggest sumo wrestlers. He rose to the third-highest makushita category in March 1988 and became the first wrestler not born in the United States to win the division’s championship. In the same month, future yokozuna Akebono Tarō, also from Hawaii, joined Azumazeki stable.
