Toronto Shooting: Police officer injured by gunfire during vehicle stop near Yonge and Eglinton

Toronto Shooting Investigations: A Toronto police officer was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries following a shooting that occurred during a vehicle stop near Yonge Street and Eglinton Avenue.

A vehicle was stopped by officers who were investigating in the vicinity at approximately 5:30 p.m.

One of the officers was wounded and transported to the hospital via an emergency run. A suspect was appreheded on the spot, and an additional individual remains unaccounted for.

In addition, the Special Investigations Unit has been summoned to investigate after an officer discharged a weapon at the site. The SIU is summoned when the actions of officers may have led to the discharge of a firearm at an individual, sexual assault, severe injury, or death.

Speaking to reporters at the hospital, Toronto police chief Myron Demkiw said the officer was shot in the abdomen, and his injuries are not life-threatening.

“He’s here in the hospital surrounded by colleagues and family, being supported during what is obviously a difficult and challenging time,” Demkiw said. “I’m relieved to say that he’s doing well.”

Police said one person was arrested at the scene. There is no immediate word on charges. A second suspect remains at large, and police have not yet released a description.
