The incident occurred during a routine police operation involving the recovery of a firearm from a storm drain.
Officer Wayne David, a seasoned member of the Metropolitan Police Department, had dedicated over 25 years of service to the city. Executive Assistant Chief Jeffery Carroll described him as “a true hero to the District of Columbia,” acknowledging the profound loss the city has endured.
“Wayne is a true hero to the District of Columbia, and today he gave his life to serve the visitors and the residents here,” Carroll stated. “We will never forget that.”
The tragic event unfolded in the Northeast quadrant of the city. According to reports from the police, officers had been monitoring a suspicious vehicle when an individual exited and fled on foot. The suspect reportedly jumped onto Interstate 295, tossing a firearm into a storm drain before making their escape on the back of a motorcycle.
In the aftermath, officers initiated a procedure to retrieve the weapon from the storm drain. During the recovery process, the firearm, which was believed to be unloaded, accidentally discharged. The unexpected discharge struck Officer David, resulting in fatal injuries. Carroll confirmed that the officer was hit at least once during the incident.
The Metropolitan Police Department has launched an extensive search for the individual who abandoned the firearm. The department is utilizing all available resources to locate the suspect, who remains at large. The incident underscores the inherent dangers faced by law enforcement officers daily, even during routine operations.
