Smith attended Union High School in Graaff-Reinet, Eastern Cape, to finish his secondary school. After that, he continued his study at Rhodes University, where he graduated with honors in chemistry and physics as a Bachelor of Science.
At the University of KwaZulu-Natal, he continued his education and earned a master’s degree.
