Cecilia Gentili Death – Cecilia Gentili, a beloved transgender actress, author, and activist, has died. An asylum seeker from Argentina, Gentili was an imposing figure in New York City and beyond. She devoted her life to advocating for the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals, sex workers, and undocumented immigrants. On February 6, family and friends informed the public of her demise through an Instagram post.
Following the publication of her acclaimed debut novel Faltas: Letters to Everyone in My Hometown Who Isn’t My Rapist in 2022 and the Broadway run of her autobiographical production Red Ink in 2023, Gentili was experiencing a period of creative profusion. Gentili told Them in a late-year interview regarding the production that while she hoped the show would be entertaining, it would also force viewers to confront the frequently severe realities of trans life.
A New York City-based AIDS service organisation, GMHC (formerly Gay Men’s Health Crisis), appointed Gentili as its Director of Policy. Additionally, she established Trans Equity Consulting, an organisational development consulting firm that advocated for the inclusion of incarcerated individuals, trans women of colour, immigrants, and sex workers. Cecilia, in her capacity as an actress, staged one-woman productions, such as The Knife Cuts Both Ways, and portrayed Ms. Orlando on the groundbreaking FX drama Pose, which centred on the experiences of trans women of colour during the AIDS crisis in 1980s New York.
As an organiser, Gentili was renowned for infusing each undertaking she oversaw with exuberant transgender delight. She conceived and co-organized Transmissions Fest, the inaugural all-trans music festival in New York City, which raised funds for LGBTQ+ charities, during the previous summer. “We are frequently represented at Pride events; however, our role is not central,” she explained to them regarding the event’s purpose. “Whereas a distinction exists.” She hosted Fierce Futures, a benefit gala in 2020 that benefited organisations that assist Black trans individuals.
