Jabari Latrell Peoples Death — An investigation is underway after Jabari Latrell Peoples, 18, of Aliceville, was fatally shot by a Homewood police officer during a late-night encounter at Homewood Soccer Park, located in the 1800 block of South Lakeshore Drive near Columbiana Road.
According to the Homewood Police Department, the incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. Monday when an officer responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle parked in the otherwise empty park. Upon approaching the vehicle, the officer encountered Peoples, who was reportedly inside.
Authorities say a physical altercation ensued, during which Peoples allegedly produced a handgun. The officer then discharged their weapon, striking Peoples. Emergency responders transported him to UAB Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:06 p.m., according to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office. The officer involved was treated at the scene for minor injuries and released. Their identity has not been made public.
As per protocol, the case has been turned over to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigation, which will lead the inquiry into the use of deadly force.
Peoples’ death has sparked grief and concern in both the Homewood and Aliceville communities. Local leaders and residents are calling for transparency as the investigation unfolds.
