He was announced dead on Thursday through a Facebook post that reads “It is with great sadness that we must announce the passing of our Dad, Bill Higgins.

A life so beautifully lived deserves to be remembered and we sincerely appreciate your patience as we take the time to mourn this tremendous loss”. The actual cause of Bill Higgins’ death has not been revealed.

Bill’s Music stands as a beacon of musical passion in Catonsville, Maryland, tracing its roots back to 1965 when William “Bill” Higgins and his wife Nancy embarked on a journey to share their love for music with the community. What started as a modest venture has blossomed into a sprawling musical destination that continues to thrive over half a century later.

Bill’s fascination with music ignited during the heyday of Rock n’ Roll in the 1950s, inspired by iconic figures like Elvis Presley, the Beatles, and the Rolling Stones. His journey into the world of music began with mastering their tunes on the guitar, eventually leading him to offer guitar lessons in people’s homes.

In 1965, Bill and Nancy seized an opportunity, renting a small 8×8 room behind a coin shop on Frederick Road in Catonsville to kickstart their musical enterprise. Initially focused on providing guitar lessons, they soon expanded their offerings to include accessories and a selection of instruments. As the store gained momentum, Bill’s Music secured dealerships with major players in the music industry, while pioneering a groundbreaking young adult credit plan to support budding musicians in acquiring necessary equipment.

While nurturing their store, Bill continued his musical pursuits as a member of a local rock band. Serendipitously, he crossed paths with fellow musicians Ron, Jim, and Lou, each bringing their unique talents to the mix. Together, they formed an enduring partnership at Bill’s Music, spanning four decades and counting.

Over the years, Bill’s Music underwent seven expansions along Frederick Road, evolving into a sprawling 36,000 sq. ft. establishment brimming with an extensive inventory of new, used, and vintage equipment from top brands in the industry. Despite its growth, the essence of family remains at the heart of the enterprise, with Bill, Nancy, and their grown children actively involved in daily operations.

Bill’s Music has transcended its physical boundaries, extending its reach through BillsMusic.com and an eBay storefront in the 1990s. Today, it stands as one of the premier independent musical retailers nationwide, catering to diverse needs such as sales, rentals, repairs, lessons, sound consultations, and trade-ins. The store also offers on-site instrument repair facilities, band rehearsal space, and mobile bandstands, further cementing its status as a hub for the musical community.

With its online presence, Bill’s Music has transcended geographical constraints, shipping instruments and equipment to enthusiasts worldwide. Its commitment to excellence and dedication to nurturing musical talent have solidified its reputation as a trailblazer in the industry.
