New Year Carnage – A driver responsible for killing 10 people and injuring 30 after plowing his vehicle into New Year’s revelers in New Orleans has been preliminarily identified as Shamsud Din Jabbar.
Authorities believe Din Jabbar drove a white pickup truck at high speed into a crowd in the French Quarter’s Bourbon Street at 3:15 a.m. on New Year’s Day.
The attack ended in a firefight with police, during which Din Jabbar was killed. Two officers were wounded in the exchange.
Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old American citizen born in Texas and a former U.S. Army serviceman, was reportedly wearing full body armor and wielding an assault rifle when he exited the vehicle.
According to the FBI, at least one improvised explosive device (IED) was found in the area, while additional explosive devices were discovered in an ice chest inside the truck. A black ISIS flag was seen on the back of the car, leading officials to investigate the attack as a potential act of terrorism.
The tragedy occurred on Bourbon Street, one of the world’s most popular New Year’s Eve destinations, as crowds gathered ahead of the Sugar Bowl college football playoff game at the nearby Superdome.
Despite the attack, New Orleans Police Commissioner Anne Kirkpatrick assured the public that the game would proceed as scheduled, with heightened security measures in place.
Speaking at a press conference, Kirkpatrick emphasized the deliberate nature of the attack, stating that Din Jabbar bypassed barriers to target pedestrians. “This man was trying to run over as many people as he could. It was not a DUI situation,” she said. The investigation is ongoing, with officials working to uncover more details about Din Jabbar’s motives and background.
